Week 6

James 3:13–4:10
Intro & Discussion

James 3:13–4:10 shifts from the tongue to the deeper issue beneath our words: the heart’s
posture. James exposes the contrast between false wisdom—rooted in envy, selfish
ambition, and pride—and true wisdom—marked by humility, purity, peace, and mercy. He
shows how internal desires, when left unchecked, erupt into external conflict: fights,
quarrels, fractured relationships, and spiritual instability. James refuses to let the church
treat these issues lightly. Instead, he calls believers to radical humility, wholehearted
repentance, and a return to God’s grace. This passage confronts the root causes of conflict
and invites us into a life shaped by God’s wisdom rather than the world’s.

Division 1: True Wisdom vs. False Wisdom (James 3:13–18)
· What does James identify as the marks of false wisdom, and how do envy and selfish
ambition distort our relationships and decisions? · How does James describe true wisdom,
and what qualities stand out to you as most needed in your life or community right now? ·
Where do you see the consequences of false wisdom—chaos, disorder, relational strain—
showing up in your home, workplace, or church?

pride?

Division 2: The Source of Conflict — Desires at War (James 4:1–5)
· According to James, what lies beneath the fights and quarrels we experience? How do
internal desires shape external conflict? · Where do you see “wanting” or “craving” driving
your reactions, expectations, or disappointments? · How does James’s warning about
friendship with the world challenge the way we prioritize comfort, approval, or
self-advancement?

· What practical habit can help you pause and examine your desires before reacting—
especially in moments of tension or conflict?

Division 3: The Call to Humility, Repentance, and Nearness to God (James 4:6–10)
· Why does James emphasize humility as the pathway to receiving God’s grace? · What
does it look like to “submit to God” and “resist the devil” in everyday life—habits, choices,
conversations, or temptations? · Which part of James’s call to repentance stands out most
to you: drawing near to God, cleansing your hands, purifying your heart, or grieving over
sin?

through confession, surrender, or intentional obedience—so He can lift you up?
